STEM Education through Agricultural-Based Learning

Organic Rice Farm Managed by Students

Agricultural and livestock practices are used as learning methods to introduce Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in schools. The development of agricultural and livestock demonstration plots provides a platform for project-based learning, enabling students to engage directly with applied scientific processes. Through this learning model, students are trained to design scientific inquiries, formulate hypotheses, develop experimental methods, and evaluate outcomes using defined indicators—either quantitatively through statistical analysis or qualitatively through narrative assessment.

 Punthuk Sewu has implemented this learning model to support senior high school students in developing scientific approaches using agriculture and livestock as spaces for experimentation. For example, SMU Diponegoro collaborates with Punthuk Sewu to develop an organic rice farming demonstration plot. Students manage the plot through a rotating maintenance schedule, allowing them to share responsibility and learn collaboratively.

 The development of the demonstration plot involves various activities, including waste and animal manure processing for organic fertilizer, fertilizer dosage trials, management of crop pests and diseases, and regular crop maintenance. These activities provide students with hands-on exposure to applied science and environmental management.

Through this practice-based approach, students are required to maintain individual observation records. These records are then used to prepare reports on demonstration plot management by analyzing multiple aspects, such as cultivation and treatment systems, the use of organic pesticides and fertilizers, plant development during both vegetative and generative phases, and yield analysis based on sampling from 1-square-meter plots.

This model provides students with the opportunity to gradually develop their analytical skills and scientific writing abilities, producing structured reports based on different thematic focuses derived from their hands-on experience in organic rice cultivation.

How Your Donation Makes a Difference

Your support and donations enable Yayasan INFEST to continue developing a formal vocational education institution that provides access to education for underserved and economically disadvantaged groups in Indonesia. Your contribution helps us expand formal education pathways, enabling more young people to acquire practical skills, enhance their livelihoods, and access better opportunities for the future.

Through your generosity, we can strengthen institutional capacity, develop learning infrastructure, and ensure that education remains inclusive and accessible. Every donation—large or small—helps us maintain momentum, nurture hope, and transform long-term commitments into tangible educational impact.

What We Are Building

Donations received during 2025–2026 will be prioritised to support the development of key facilities and infrastructure for our vocational education programme, including:

  1. Improved student classrooms to create safe, comfortable, and effective learning environments;
  2. A library and additional learning facilities to support literacy, independent learning, and academic growth;
  3. Student dormitory facilities to accommodate learners from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and remote areas;
  4. A vocational skills training center to deliver hands-on, practice-oriented education aligned with employment and livelihood opportunities; and
  5. A main hall to serve as a shared space for learning activities, training events, community engagement, and institutional gatherings.

Through these efforts, Yayasan INFEST aims to build an inclusive, sustainable, and impactful vocational education ecosystem that equips learners with skills for the future while fostering dignity, resilience, and opportunity.
