The Challenge: Access Without Literacy.
In the post–COVID-19 landscape, Indonesian children have gained widespread access to smartphones and the internet. However, this rapid expansion has not been matched by adequate digital literacy among children or parents. Consequently, mobile devices are predominantly used for entertainment and gaming rather than educational purposes. This issue is intensified by the lack of strict national regulations on minimum age requirements for social media, placing the burden of digital safety almost entirely on families—many of whom are ill-equipped to manage it.
Rural Constraints & Educational Barriers.
In rural communities, these digital hurdles intersect with broader educational constraints. Many parents face academic limitations that prevent them from effectively supporting their children’s learning at home, particularly in subjects like mathematics. Furthermore, a low awareness of the importance of structured study time and screen-time supervision often leads to reduced academic engagement outside school hours.
The Solution: Punthuk Sewu Learning Center.
To address these interconnected challenges, Punthuk Sewu Learning Center provides structured academic support through school-subject consultation classes held daily from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The program offers a safe environment where children receive guidance to reinforce school lessons and develop disciplined study habits. By redirecting evening hours toward productive learning, the initiative actively reduces excessive smartphone dependency while strengthening cognitive skills and motivation.
Community Impact and Beyond.
This initiative has been warmly received by the local community, demonstrating a strong demand for accessible educational support. Beyond academic assistance, the program plays a vital preventive role—promoting healthier digital behavior and fostering a balanced relationship between technology and learning for the next generation in rural Indonesia.
