PROJECT UPDATE: Turning "Screen Time" into "Study Time"

By Mufid | Teacher at Punthuk Sewu

Dear Supporters and Partners,

In an era where technology is inseparable from daily life, we are witnessing a significant shift in the habits of school-aged children in our communities. While gadgets offer a world of information, they have also led to a concerning decline in traditional study habits. At Punthuk Sewu Learning Center, we are not just fighting the distraction—we are transforming it.

The Challenge: The Vanishing Habit of Study

We have observed that many children are losing their "habit of study" due to excessive and unmonitored screen time. This trend doesn't just affect their grades; it also impacts their focus, social interactions, and curiosity. However, the solution isn't to take the gadgets away, but to change how they are used.

Our Mission: Digital Literacy for a Purpose

This month, we launched a specialized initiative focused on Digital Literacy. Our goal is to move children from being passive consumers of content to active, digital learners. Our program focuses on three key areas:

  1. Awareness of Digital Risks: Educating children and parents about the physical and psychological impacts of excessive gadget use, from eye strain to the loss of concentration.
  2. Productive Screen Time: Teaching children how to use their devices for educational purposes—finding reliable information, using language apps, and exploring STEM-based platforms.
  3. The "Positive Gadget" Mindset: Encouraging students to view their smartphones not as toys, but as powerful tools that can help them master Mathematics, Science, and English.

From Passive to Proactive

The transformation is already beginning. We are seeing students who once only used devices for social media now using them to access our digital learning materials. By integrating technology into our mentoring sessions, we are ensuring that technology serves the student, rather than the student serving the technology.

Next Steps: Strengthening the Digital Foundation

With your continued support, our next goals are:

  • Parental Digital Workshops: Training parents on how to monitor and guide their children's digital journey at home.
  • Curating Educational Content: Providing a "Library of Positive Links" that students can explore safely during their study time.

Thank you for helping us navigate this digital frontier. Your contributions are helping us ensure that the next generation is not just tech-savvy, but tech-wise.

With gratitude,

The Punthuk Sewu Team
