Bridging the Gap - Empowering Digital Literacy in Education

By Nur Abdullah | Teacher at Punthuk Sewu

Dear Supporters and Partners,

As we move forward in 2026, education is no longer just about books and classrooms; it is about navigating a vast digital world. However, as technology advances, a new challenge emerges: the Digital Literacy Gap. Today, we want to share the reality of digital literacy in Indonesia and how your support is helping us tackle these educational hurdles.

The Reality: Indonesia’s Digital Landscape

While internet access is growing, the ability to use it safely and effectively is still lagging. Recent data reveals a critical situation:

  • Below ASEAN Average: In 2023, Indonesia’s digital literacy rate reached 62%, still trailing behind the ASEAN average of 70%.
  • The Skill Gap: Although the Indonesia Digital Society Index (IMDI) rose to 44.53 in 2025, indicating better technical skills, there is still a massive need for consistent education on how to use these tools for productive learning rather than just entertainment.

The Challenges We Face in Education

Low digital literacy creates significant obstacles for students and teachers alike:

  1. Hoaxes & Misinformation: Many students struggle to verify information, making them vulnerable to "fake news" that can disrupt their learning and critical thinking.
  2. Digital Safety & Ethics: With the rise of cyberbullying and online scams, many young learners do not yet understand how to protect their personal data or maintain ethical behavior online.
  3. Infrastructure Inequality: In many remote areas where we work, internet access remains unstable, widening the educational gap between urban and rural students.

Our Approach: Empowering through Four Pillars

To ensure our students are not just "online" but "digitally capable," our program focuses on four essential pillars:

  • Digital Skills: Teaching students and teachers how to use educational software and platforms effectively.
  • Digital Safety: Educating families on how to protect privacy and avoid cyber threats.
  • Digital Culture: Promoting the use of technology to strengthen national identity and positive values.
  • Digital Ethics: Building a generation that communicates with respect and empathy in digital spaces.

Your Impact: Beyond the Screen

Your contributions allow us to bring structured digital literacy programs to communities that need them most. We are not just providing gadgets; we are providing the knowledge to use them wisely. By aligning our efforts with national initiatives like Siberkreasi, we are helping students turn their devices into tools for a brighter, safer future.

Thank you for helping us transform digital challenges into educational opportunities. Together, we are building a generation that is not only tech-savvy but tech-wise.

With gratitude,

Nur abdullah,

Learning Center Teacher
