Why After-School Mentoring Matters in Rural Indonesia?

By Mufid | Teacher at Punthuk Sewu

Dear Supporters and Global Partners,

Great change often begins in the most modest places. At Punthuk Sewu Learning Center, our mission to support rural children’s education is rooted in two simple learning spaces that have become the beating heart of our community. Today, we would like to share why our presence is essential and how we are preparing to grow beyond our current physical boundaries.

The Critical Need: Why After-School Mentoring Matters

In rural areas of Indonesia, school-aged children face challenges that extend far beyond the classroom. Through our daily engagement with children and families, we have identified three key reasons why after-school mentoring is vital for their future:

1. The Educational Gap at Home
Many parents in rural communities did not have the opportunity to complete secondary or higher education. As a result, they often struggle to provide academic guidance or homework support for their children. While parental care is strong, limited educational background makes structured learning assistance difficult. Our mentoring program helps bridge this gap by providing consistent academic support outside school hours.

2. Limited Awareness of the Importance of Learning Support
In many households, the long-term value of education is frequently overshadowed by immediate economic pressures. Education is often seen as the sole responsibility of schools, leading to minimal supervision of children’s learning at home. Punthuk Sewu Learning Center offers a safe and supportive environment where children can focus, develop discipline, and rebuild positive learning habits.

3. Digital Distractions in Children’s Daily Lives
Like children everywhere, rural youth are increasingly exposed to gadgets and digital content. Without guidance and digital literacy, screen time often replaces meaningful study time. Our mentoring sessions act as a “reset button,” helping children reconnect with learning, curiosity, and creativity in a structured and supervised environment.

Our Current Foundation: Small Spaces, Big Impact

Despite limited infrastructure, we make the most of our existing facilities:

  • Multi-Purpose Open Hall (10 × 6 meters)
A flexible space for group mentoring sessions, informal classes, vocational activities for women, and community learning events.

  • Dedicated Classroom (10 × 6 meters)
A quiet, weather-protected learning space used for language classes, STEM activities, and basic digital literacy training.

These spaces may be modest, but they have enabled dozens of children to receive regular learning support and regain confidence in their education.

Our Future Vision: Building for Sustainability

We believe every child deserves a stable and supportive learning environment. To expand our impact, Punthuk Sewu Learning Center is working toward a long-term vision: transforming from an informal learning initiative into a formal educational institution.

To achieve this, we are gradually raising funds to develop:

  • Expanded formal classrooms to support an accredited learning curriculum

  • A dedicated library to nurture reading habits and independent learning

  • Student dormitories (asrama) to provide safe accommodation for children from remote villages, reducing long and difficult daily commutes

How Your Contribution Makes a Difference

Your support directly strengthens children’s access to quality education. Through your donation, you help us to:

  • Provide learning materials and tools for daily mentoring activities

  • Maintain and improve safe and functional learning spaces

  • Fund the early stages of classroom, library, and dormitory construction

  • Support local mentors and facilitators who guide children whose parents cannot provide academic assistance

Thank you for believing that meaningful change can grow from simple spaces. Together, we are not only building classrooms—we are building confidence, resilience, and hope for Indonesia’s rural children.

With gratitude,
The Punthuk Sewu Learning Center Team
