Building a Formal Boarding School to Empower 400 Underprivileged Youths

By Nur Abdullah | Project Staff

Since 2023, Punthuk Sewu Learning Center has stood as more than a classroom—it has been a sanctuary of hope in Bantul, Yogyakarta. What began as a small grassroots initiative has grown into a meaningful lifeline for more than 50 underprivileged children and youth.

Over the past years, we have worked tirelessly to bridge academic gaps—strengthening numeracy in Mathematics, improving English proficiency, and nurturing discipline and character through faith-based guidance. We have seen confidence grow. We have seen dreams take shape.

But we have also come to a critical realization:

Informal education alone cannot break structural poverty.

Across Indonesia, economic vulnerability quietly limits children’s potential. With around 60% of the population living below the upper-middle-income poverty line, millions of families face impossible choices—between daily survival and long-term investment in education. For many, a book becomes a luxury. A school fee becomes a burden. And gradually, opportunity fades.

Without systemic intervention, poverty does not disappear—it reproduces itself across generations.

Our Vision: A Formal Bridge to the Future (2026–2028)

We are now preparing for the next chapter.

Between 2026 and 2028, we aim to transform Punthuk Sewu Learning Center into a Formal Junior Secondary School (SMP) and a Vocational Training Center (LPK).

Our chosen model is an integrated boarding school (pesantren)—a system designed not only to educate, but to shape character, discipline, and resilience. Within this environment, academic excellence, STEM mastery, vocational competence, and Islamic values are integrated into daily life.

Education will not end at theory.
It will be practical, applied, and transformative.

Our Target:

By 2028, we aim to empower 400 students from underprivileged families across Yogyakarta.

What We Are Building Together

To turn vision into reality, we are developing a comprehensive and sustainable education ecosystem:

Academic Hub

  • Modern classrooms

  • A fully equipped library

  • A dedicated STEM laboratory

Residential Wing

  • Safe and supportive student dormitories

  • Adequate sanitation and health facilities

Vocational Wing

  • A specialized Agribusiness and Livestock Training Center

  • Hands-on skills training aligned with local economic opportunities

Holistic Infrastructure

  • A main auditorium for learning and community engagement

  • Health and sanitation centers

  • Sustainable waste management systems

This is not merely infrastructure development.
It is institutional transformation.

Be the Foundation of Their Future

This initiative is not just about constructing buildings.
It is about constructing futures.

When you support this expansion, you are not simply making a donation—you are investing in:

  • Rural scientists and innovators

  • Ethical leaders rooted in values

  • Skilled agripreneurs

  • Young people capable of lifting their families out of poverty

Your contribution today builds the classrooms of tomorrow.
Your generosity shapes a generation.

“Education is the most powerful tool you can use to change the world.”

Join us in building a school where poverty ends—and opportunity begins.
