Transforming Our Learning Center into a Formal School

By Mufid | Teacher at Punthuk Sewu

Since 2023, the Punthuk Sewu Learning Center has been a sanctuary for dreams. What started as a grassroots initiative in Bantul, Yogyakarta, has blossomed into a vital lifeline for over 50 underprivileged students.

We have spent the last few years closing the gap—strengthening Mathematics, polishing English, and nurturing character. But as we look into the eyes of our students, we realize that to truly break the cycle of poverty, informal support is no longer enough.

The Challenge: Why "Informal" is Not Enough

In Indonesia, economic vulnerability is a quiet thief of potential. With approximately 60% of the population living below the upper-middle-income poverty line, many families are forced to choose between a meal on the table or a school fee. This structural poverty often leads to learning loss and dropouts.

Through our close interaction with these families, we have learned a critical lesson: to sustainably break the cycle of poverty, children need structured, high-quality formal education—particularly in science, numeracy, and vocational skills.

The Vision: A Formal Bridge to the Future (2026–2028)

We are embarking on our most ambitious journey yet. Between 2026 and 2028, Yayasan INFEST aims to transform our humble center into a fully accredited:

  1. Junior Secondary School (SMP Level)

  2. Vocational Training Center (LPK)

We are adopting an integrated Boarding School (Pesantren) model. This allows us to provide more than just lessons; we provide a home where academic excellence, STEM mastery, and Islamic values like discipline and etiquette are woven into daily life.

Our Goal: To empower 400 students from underprivileged families across Yogyakarta by 2028.

What We Are Building Together

To turn this vision into bricks and mortar, we are raising funds to develop a comprehensive education ecosystem:

  • Academic Hub: Modern classrooms, a library, and a dedicated STEM Laboratory.

  • Residential Wing: Safe student dormitories and supporting facilities.

  • Vocational Wing: A center focused on Agribusiness and Livestock industries, giving students practical skills to enter the workforce or start their own ventures.

  • Holistic Facilities: Health and sanitation centers and sustainable waste management systems.

Be the Foundation of Their Future

This is not just a construction project; it is a human transformation project. By supporting this expansion, you are not just donating—you are investing in a generation of scientists, farmers, and leaders who will lift their families out of poverty.

Your contribution today builds the classrooms of tomorrow.

"Education is the most powerful tool which you can use to change the world."
