Project Report | Feb 26, 2026
From Classroom to Livelihood

By Umam Hadinata | Project Staff

Education should not end at the classroom door. For many rural children in Indonesia, finishing school does not automatically translate into economic opportunity. Diplomas alone are often insufficient without practical skills, market relevance, and pathways to sustainable income. As a result, many young people complete their education only to face limited employment options, informal work, or economic uncertainty.

At Punthuk Sewu Learning Center in Bantul, Yogyakarta, we believe education must be directly connected to livelihood. Since 2023, we have supported children from low-income families through academic tutoring, character development, and vocational exposure in agribusiness and livestock. Through this work, we have learned that strengthening literacy and numeracy is essential—but linking education to practical economic skills is transformative.

Our vision is to transition from informal support into a formal Junior Secondary School and Vocational Training Center that integrates STEM education, digital literacy, and hands-on training aligned with local rural economies. By combining structured academic instruction with applied vocational competencies, we aim to equip students not only to graduate, but to thrive.

From classroom to livelihood means preparing students to:

  • Develop employable skills relevant to local industries.
  • Build entrepreneurial capacity rooted in agribusiness and sustainable practices.
  • Strengthen critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Gain recognized credentials that open doors to further education or employment.

By 2028, we aim to serve 400 students from underprivileged families, creating a direct bridge between education and economic resilience. When education leads to livelihood, families gain stability, communities grow stronger, and poverty loses its grip.
