From Learning Center to Vocational School: Scaling Our Impact of Our Learning Center

By Nur Abdullah | Project Staff

Dear Supporters and Partners,

Education is the most powerful tool to break the cycle of structural poverty. Since 2023, the Punthuk Sewu Learning Centre in Bantul, Yogyakarta, has been a beacon of hope for children from underprivileged families. What began as a grassroots community initiative has successfully evolved into a structured program—strengthening academic skills in Math and English, building character, and introducing students to the world of agribusiness.

However, we have reached a critical realization: informal support is not enough. To truly empower these children to move beyond their socio-economic barriers, they need access to formal, accredited, and systematically structured education.

The Challenge: Barriers to Mobility

Children from low-income households face a high risk of dropping out due to economic pressure, a lack of digital connectivity, and minimal academic supervision. Without recognized credentials or market-relevant skills, poverty is frequently passed from one generation to the next.

Our Strategic Vision (2026–2028): The Transformation

To bridge this gap, Yayasan INFEST is launching a strategic roadmap to transform Punthuk Sewu into a formal educational institution. Our goal is to provide a "safety net" and a "springboard" for 400 underprivileged students by 2028.

Key Pillars of the New Institution:

  • Formal Secondary School & Vocational Training Center (LPK): Providing students with state-recognisedstate-recognized diplomas and professional certifications.
  • A Supportive Boarding Model:Utilizing a 24-hour residential environment (similar to the pesantren model) to foster discipline, leadership, and ethical values.
  • Future-Ready Curriculum: A specialized focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) alongside hands-on training in modern agribusiness and livestock management.

Developing a Modern Educational Ecosystem

To support this ambitious transition, we are planning a comprehensive infrastructure development project, including:

  • State-of-the-art classrooms and STEM laboratories.
  • Safe and comfortable student dormitories.
  • A specialized vocational hub for agricultural innovation.
  • A librar, and integrated health and sanitation facilities.

The Impact: Investing in Human Capital

This transformation is more than just a construction project; it is a strategic investment in Yogyakarta's youth. By formalising our curriculum, we will reduce dropout rates, provide recognised qualifications, and equip young people with the competencies needed for the modern job market.

Dear friends, expanding access to quality education is the same as expanding opportunity. And when we expand opportunity, we strengthen hope for generations to come. Thank you for your continued belief in this vision and for standing with the families of Punthuk Sewu.
