Improving the Lives of Senegalese Women through Poultry Cultivation

Friends,

It is my pleasure to share our first GlobalGiving report on the progress of CREATE!’s project to create sustainable livelihoods for rural women through poultry production in rural Senegal.

Cooperative garden groups in the communities of Fass Koffe and Fass Kane have already raised hundreds of chickens through CREATE!’s poultry program.  In the village of Fass Koffe, cooperative group members have raised 100 chickens since the beginning of March.  Of these, the women have already sold 43 chickens and raised $225.  The poultry project in the community of Fass Kane has been even more successful.  The Fass Kane cooperative group sold their most recent flock of 57 chickens for just over $300.

Each project participant can make approximately $100 per year by producing poultry for sale.  In rural Senegalese communities, where the average per capita income is $350, this additional income can profoundly improve the lives of women and their families.

Kine Lo is the primary caretaker of the chickens in Fass Koffe.  She is very enthusiastic about CREATE!’s programs and takes pride in her work with the poultry project in Fass Koffe.  “Before CREATE! came, I wasn’t working; now I have work.  I’m responsible for feeding the chickens.  I participate in CREATE!’s programs because it improves my life.”

The cooperative garden groups in CREATE!’s partner communities of Ouarkhokh, Diender, and Thieneba are eager to begin their own poultry programs.  With your generous donation, we can support women in these communities as they begin their own poultry cultivation programs.

Thank you for your interest in and support of our programs in Senegal.  This project would not be possible without your thoughtful donation! Please contact me at kaitlyn@createaction.org with any questions, feedback, or concerns.  We really appreciate your donation to help women in rural Senegal become economically self-sufficient!

Best wishes,

Kaitlyn Grigsby
