Thank you for our continued support of CREATE!’s project to create sustainable livelihoods for rural women through poultry production in Senegal. Since our last report in May, our poultry cooperatives have continued to expand and thrive thanks to your generous donations.
The poultry cooperatives in the communities of Fass Kane and Fass Koffe timed their most recent sale of poultry to coincide with the recent Korité holiday. Korité celebrates the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Because the holiday includes several days of feasting with family and friends, many Senegalese purchase fresh meat at this time. Poultry cooperative members decided to capitalize on the increased demand during the Korité holiday. After selling their flock of 134 chickens, the Fass Kane cooperative made about $210 in profit for this production cycle. The cooperative in Fass Koffe expects a profit of about $235 from 150 chickens. Both cooperatives plan to use some of their profit to purchase new chicks for the next production cycle.
In the community of Ouarkhokh, cooperative members are preparing to begin construction on their own poultry shed. Ouarkhokh is located in northern Senegal, and has unique conditions – extreme heat and large snake populations - that complicate poultry production. The Ouarkhokh cooperative has modified the poultry shed design to allow chickens to thrive regardless of these challenges.
Because of its location along a major highway, Ouarkhokh’s poultry cooperative will be able to sell poultry directly to passing motorists. In the future, cooperative members hope to start their own restaurant using poultry, fruit, nuts, and vegetables produced in their garden.
