The coastal County of Kilifi in Kenya reports high levels of poverty, low levels of education and spread unfriendly fishing practices that threaten the marine ecosystem. The project will support children in condition of vulnerability and their families through environmental education paths, intercultural and artistic workshops and the creation of school vegetable gardens in order to promote environmental education, a sense of global citizenship and food security.
In Kenya more than one out of three people lives under the poverty line. In the coastal County of Kilifi fisheries sector plays an important role, but fishing practices threaten the marine ecosystem and climate change is causing a reduction in natural resources. Kilifi reports low levels of education: for children, especially for girls, access to school and to better living conditions is a real challenge and students are not fully aware about the importance of the environment preservation.
Aleimar wants to support children in condition of vulnerability in Kilifi County, involving students and the community in environmental education paths and intercultural workshops aimed at strengthening relational skills and promoting fair and environmentally friendly behaviors. The project also foresees the creation of school vegetable gardens, artistic workshops and theatre performances to increase awareness about the impact of climate change.
The project will increase of a sense of global citizenship able to activate process of generational change in school-age youth, strengthening the role of schools in the promotion of environmental education, fight against climate change and development of a sustainable economy. Moreover, food security of students of five coastal schools and of their families will be improved.
