Dear Friends,
After three months from our last report, we would like to update all of you on the “ECOS” project.
Environmental Education Sessions:
In May and June, the educational activities within the environmental clubs of the schools were concluded with a special event called “Sea Turtle Week”, organized in collaboration with Ocean Sole. This initiative highlighted the problem of plastic pollution in the oceans, focusing on its impact on marine wildlife and, on sea turtles, an iconic yet endangered species.
During the sessions, students had the opportunity to watch a documentary on sea turtles, which clearly and engagingly illustrated the conservation challenges these animals face. Practical workshop followed, encouraging the creative use of recycled materials. These activities provided tangible examples of how to reduce waste and give new life to discarded items, fostering a more sustainable approach to natural resources.
Training Activities in the Kilifi Creek Area:
Training activities were carried out in the creek communities, addressing the same topics and concluding in mid-August. A nutritionist was involved in these sessions to provide in-depth insights into “Food Security”, offering practical information on balanced diets and sustainable access to food resources. This intervention strengthened local knowledge, promoted healthier eating habits, and supported more efficient agricultural practices.
Library Construction and Recreational Spaces:
The setup of school libraries in all schools was completed! The delivery of tables, chairs, and bookshelves transformed former classrooms into welcoming spaces now available for reading, studying, and collaborative play. Thanks to the books and board games donated by the project, students finally have accessible spaces that encourage learning, cultural growth, and the development of key social skills.
Theater Activities in Schools and Communities:
During July and August, a local theater company worked closely with children and youth from schools and communities to stage performances. These plays addressed the main themes covered in the training sessions – environmental conservation, food security, and the protection of natural resources – using a creative and accessible language that engaged both the young performers and their audiences. After two months of intensive preparation, the performances were a resounding success. Parents, teachers, and community members expressed strong appreciation for the students’ talent and for the educational messages delivered through the plays.
These cultural activities raised broader community awareness on environmental and social issues and the support of all of you is fundamental!
Thank you!
