Challenge

According to(BBC report on 29th October,2010)the average illiteracy rate among Batwa was at 92.3% in all 6 districts.Their rights have been abused in a permanent vicious cycle of poverty, and very few Batwa have positions in public service because of their low levels of education. Alice Nyamihanda is the only Mutwa Graduate in Uganda. Without access to quality education Batwa children are more vulnerable to the effects of poverty including child marriage, teenage pregnancies and low paying jobs.

Solution

Cherie Wilshire Foundation Seeks sponsorships to provide quality education for 110 Batwa children living in communal camps and settlements in grass thatched houses around Bwindi impenetrable forest. Education is the only sustainable approach to change the mind set of Batwa children and their generations to help them catch up with modernity and relate with other people in the region. In terms of getting formal employment, representation in government as well as being a recognized community.

Long-Term Impact

By supporting these children of indigenous Batwa regions from most vulnerable families this project can impact their entire community and changing their mindset since they lived in the forest for so long. The organization's education projects like child sponsorship, skills trainings like carpentry, welding, tailoring, weaving, crafts making. Investing in to small businesses are also facilitating lasting change.
