This week is a big week for our graduates from African Angels, who left us as the first graduating class in 2017 and entered high school in 2018. This year they are finishing their final year of high school, and are matriculants.
Okuhle and Awonke, two boys from our first graduating class, started at Lilyfontein in 2018, and are now preparing for their final exams.
On Wednesday night it was the Lilyfontein Prizegiving, and Okuhle was awarded a number of prizes, including:
Most Promising U19 Rugby Player
Winner Home Language English Award
School Award for Perseverance.
Johnson Floating Trophy for Sporting, Academic, Pastoral and Cultural Pursuits
Okuhle is a particularly determined and hardworking student and these awards are a testament to that.
In South Africa, each school has a Valedictory Assembly. Yesterday I had the privilege of attending the Lilyfontein School Valedictory with the mothers of the boys, and their in-country sponsors and supporters. As their final school assembly, it was a moving and humbling experience, as we see our boys finish their 15 years of schooling.
We could not be prouder of both and it has taken a village, including Okuhle's Dutch based sponsor, Sally, Jeroen and Sabine.
It is 'first' moments like these that really bring home how powerful the foundational education the boys received at African Angels is. Okuhle plans to study high school teaching in 2023, and Awonke plans to study IT. On completion, both boys will be the first members of their families to complete a tertiary degree.
We are thankful for the support of our principal donor, Mercedes Benz South Africa, who share our passion for education, and people like you that are the lifeblood of our organisation. We are proud of how far our graduates have come and how far they will go.
We are grateful to be able to change the future lives of children in Chintsa East, South Africa.
