Summary

The youth of the Koung Jor Shan Refugee Camp seek a brighter future through supplementary education. Due to their status as unofficial refugees, these children can only achieve basic levels of schooling that allow little advancement. In partnership with Koung Jor, TBF seeks to evolve our already successful education program by continuing support for supplementary education classes and teacher stipends. TBF will also provide teacher training workshops to build the capacity of local teachers.

Challenge

Due to their status as unofficial refugees, a lack of available resources, discrimination, and being overlooked by larger international aid entities, the Koung Jor youth have less of a chance to advance beyond basic education. Students leave the Camp with limited job prospects and consequently, many are tempted away from their community to seek low paid jobs in the city. By fragmenting the society, this leaves them vulnerable to exploitation, discrimination and leads to a lack of empowerment.

Solution

We seek to evolve our successful education program by supporting wages for English and information technology teachers. We also provide school uniforms, textbooks and teacher training workshops. Supplementary courses allow students at Koung Jor and nearby villages to advance beyond the basics they learn in local schools, encouraging them to seek higher education and personal advancement. This project has already helped students attend bridging education programs; TBF aims for continued success.

Long-Term Impact

Supplementary education empowers communities and offers opportunities for higher education, giving students the confidence and skills to enter the advanced workforce. This ongoing project promotes job creation in the Camp since former students often go on to become teachers, inspiring the younger generations to commit to their studies. For community elders (many of whom are illiterate), education offers hope that new generations of the community are destined for a future of options & prosperity.
