The Y-Peer team, and more importantly the young people in Moldova, are so grateful for your support and for the opportunity to broaden and deepen their learnings and experience.
Adolescents are having a preparation for adult life far above that they would ever have received in a society where in rural areas parents are quite frequently working abroad, and with teacher’s salaries at little more than $400 a month, there are enormous strains in developing effective role models.
Outward migration is a major issue and a great concern for Europe’s poorest nation. Nearly 1 million Moldovans are legally abroad (our of a population of 3.5 million) – there are many also who are “off-radar” and are illegally working.
Many young people state that they are grateful for the sacrifices being made by their parents in being away for months, years, on end so that their children can have benefits the parents would never have had. With an estimated third of Moldova’s GDP being from incoming receipts from the diaspora, such benefits are possible to see.
However, the impact on society and the social infrastructure, and the often absence of active male members of the family, do create ongoing problems. The Y-Peer programme offers young people the chance to develop socially, intellectually and emotionally.
Previous reports have already seen how gender equality training and coaching in how to formulate a strong, coherent and capturing message have made a massive impact of young lives. In the next reports we will explore how your support has once again broadened the minds of the young people through social theatre.
Thank you for coming on this journey with the young people.
