Educate a deaf child in Somalia

Since the last report, the Educate a Deaf Child in Somalia project has continued to make a meaningful impact in the lives of marginalized children in Garowe district, Nugal region. Over the past quarter, we have enrolled 42 deaf children in primary school, ensuring that they have full access to free, quality education. This support includes the payment of school fees, provision of daily transportation to and from school, and monthly incentives for teachers who specialize in instructing deaf students. These measures have helped create a more inclusive learning environment and significantly reduced the burden on families who previously could not afford to send their children to school.

One inspiring story is that of Fartun, a 10-year-old girl who had never stepped into a classroom before this project. Coming from a low-income household, her parents lacked the resources and knowledge to support her special educational needs. Since being enrolled in the program, Fartun has not only learned basic literacy and numeracy skills but has also begun to express herself through sign language with growing confidence. Her teachers report remarkable progress, and her parents, once isolated by stigma and uncertainty, are now active supporters of her learning journey.

Overall, the project continues to foster inclusive education and community awareness, bridging the gap for deaf children who were previously left behind. We remain committed to expanding this reach and ensuring that every deaf child in Puntland has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
