Educate a deaf child in Somalia

Summary

During the reporting period, the project achieved significant milestones in improving access to quality education for deaf children in Somalia. Through your generous support, we strengthened the learning environment by addressing key barriers affecting school attendance, student well-being, and the quality of education. These interventions have contributed to increased student motivation, improved attendance, and a safer, more inclusive learning environment.

What We Accomplished

During this reporting period, we successfully implemented the following key activities:

• School Feeding Program: We provided daily nutritious meals to deaf students, helping to improve school enrollment, increase regular attendance, and enhance students' concentration and overall morale. The school feeding initiative has also reduced the financial burden on families, encouraging parents to keep their children in school.
• Teacher Incentives: We provided incentives to teachers to ensure continuity of teaching and improve the quality of education. This support has strengthened teacher motivation, reduced absenteeism, and enabled students to receive consistent instruction using appropriate teaching methods for deaf learners.
• Solar Power Installation: A solar energy system was installed at the school, providing a reliable source of electricity for classrooms and administrative activities. The installation has improved the learning environment by ensuring access to lighting and supporting educational activities that were previously limited by unreliable power.
• Rehabilitation of School Latrines: The school's sanitation facilities were rehabilitated to provide students with safe, clean, and accessible toilets. These improvements have enhanced hygiene, promoted students' health and dignity, and created a more child-friendly learning environment.

Impact

These combined interventions have significantly improved the educational experience for deaf children attending the school. Students now benefit from better nutrition, a safer and healthier environment, reliable electricity, and motivated teachers who are able to provide continuous instruction. Together, these improvements are contributing to higher attendance, better student engagement, and stronger learning outcomes.

Looking Ahead

In the next reporting period, we will continue supporting the school feeding program, maintain teacher incentives, monitor the functionality of the solar system and rehabilitated facilities, and work closely with parents and the community to sustain student enrollment and attendance. We also plan to strengthen educational support services to ensure deaf children continue to receive quality, inclusive education.
