Develop Africa is committed to offering girls the educational opportunities they may not get on their own. Because in Africa boys are given preference in education we have a specific focus to assist girls. We're confident that with the right environment each girl can rise to meet their ambitions. Unfortunately, some girls will naturally need additional supports.
Meet Onike. Onike has been identified by teachers to have special needs. She doesn't speak a lot, and she is often nonresponsive in school. But, she still has so much potential. In Africa, resources for the developmentally delayed are scarce especially for those living in poverty. Fortunately for Onike, Develop Africa's team has some background in working with mentally challenged individuals and know that Onike has the worth and potential to thrive as a part of her community.
Develop Africa has risen to the challenge of helping Onike. Since Onike's family is impoverished they cannot afford a doctor's visit. We're working on finding a doctor to give an official diagnosis. With that diagnosis, we'll be able to start the search for the supports she desperately needs to learn. We're reaching out to local universities with programs specializing in special education so we can find a personal tutor for Onike. The additional challenge is finding someone willing to travel to where Onike is living and studying since she and her family are unable to travel very far due to financial and logistical issues. But, we're not giving up!
Once we can find someone who specializes in special needs education we can begin the long process of teaching Onike the things she will need to live and work without abuse or exploitation. Onike deserves the ability to make as many choices in her life as possible, just like her student peers. We're confident that with the right supports Onike can grow into a successful adult who has the potential to live a long, productive, and happy life.
We're excited for Onike on her journey towards her bright future.
