May is Mental Health Awareness Month

By Amy Baty-Herbert | Project Leader

May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month, serving as a time to increase awareness and decrease stigma surrounding behavioral health issues. Mental illness and addiction can impact anyone, from patients to providers, families, and society as a whole.

Recently, Mariama and Salma attended a mentoring session focused on mental health awareness. During the session, Dr. Sarah C. provided a one-hour presentation on topics such as mental health, warning signs of mental illness, and examples of mental health disorders. The session was interactive, with some of the girls sharing personal stories related to depression, addiction, and low self-esteem. Dr. Sarah offered coping mechanism tips and advice on how to protect oneself from mental health disorders.

Mariama and Salma talk about what they learned following the mentoring session on mental health.

"Hello, my name is Salma. From today's mentoring topic, which is mental health, I learned a lot. One which was to know that some people are going through mental health issues and how to manage mental health for myself.

My name is Mariama. At today's mentoring session, we talked about mental health. From today's topic, I learned that we should observe one another and observe the way we are feeling and our own mental health."

The mentoring session's purpose was to create mental health awareness among the girls, and it was successful in doing so.  We are incredibly grateful for the continuous impact that our recurring donors are making toward girls' education including mentoring sessions. If you haven't joined our community of recurring donors yet, we warmly invite you to consider setting up a recurring donation. Even a small monthly contribution can go a long way in empowering girls through education.

We also encourage you to share our mission with your network and invite them to support girls' education as well. Together, we can make a significant impact in breaking down the barriers to education for girls in Sierra Leone.

If you have any questions or need assistance with setting up a recurring donation, please feel free to email us at GlobalGiving@developafrica.org. Thank you for your support in empowering the next generation of girls through education.

With gratitude,

Amy & the Develop Africa Team
