Update from the Field: Special Needs Student Thriving

By Amy Baty-Herbert | Project Leader

Onike in class

We introduced Onike in November 2020 as a special needs student struggling significantly at school.  From Nov 2020 through June 2022, Onike had a private tutor thanks in part to your support, and this year Onike entered school again. We are grateful for your continued support, and we would like to provide you with an update on her recent progress.

The Develop Africa Sierra Leone (DASL) team recently visited the school where Onike attends to assess her academic development; their report is below.  Video from their visit can be viewed here.

During our visit, we fulfilled her request from our previous encounter and presented her with a teddy bear doll. She was overjoyed and held onto the doll tightly, expressing her excitement. Evidently, the doll would serve as a valuable tool for improving her braiding skills, as she has a keen interest in hair plaiting.

Report from Onike's Lesson Teacher:

During June 2023, our focus was on numbers and matching letters to objects. Onike consistently displays a friendly and cheerful demeanor, garnering affection from her peers. She actively plays and engages with her friends, although occasional moodiness has been observed.

Academically, Onike faces some challenges, but she is making gradual progress. She interacts well with others, willingly takes on assigned duties, and exhibits helpfulness. She is punctual and maintains a neat appearance. Although she can recognize and read out letters and numbers, she struggles to transcribe from the blackboard to her notebook.

Despite these challenges, Onike is very committed to attending school and is rarely absent. However, it is important to note that she progresses at her own pace, necessitating flexible scheduling for our lessons.

We want to express our gratitude for your support, which helps us provide Onike with the necessary resources and guidance to overcome these obstacles. Your generosity plays a vital role in her educational journey, and we remain dedicated to ensuring her continued growth and development.

You are truly making a difference with every dollar you donate.  If you are not yet a recurring donor and would like to make a greater impact on girls' education, you can set up a recurring donation here.

If you have any questions, please email us at GlobalGiving@developafrica.org.

With great appreciation,
Amy and the Develop Africa team
