Onike is Preparing for the National Primary School Exam

By Amy Baty-Herbert | Project Leader

We introduced Onike in November 2020 as a special needs student struggling significantly at school. Thanks to your support, she had a private tutor from November 2020 through June 2022. In 2023, Onike re-entered school and has been making gradual academic progress. While she consistently displays a friendly and cheerful demeanor, earning affection from her peers, she faces challenges, particularly with transcribing from the blackboard to her notebook.

The Develop Africa Sierra Leone (DASL) Program team recently visited Onike, who is currently in class 6 and plans to sit for the National Primary School Examination at the end of this school year. Passing the National Primary Exam is a requirement for a student to continue to the next grade level which is Junior Secondary School.

Onike was happy to see them and shared that she recently took her school's mock final examination, which was challenging due to the long duration of each subject. However, she managed to complete it with the support of her class teacher.

During the visit, Onike's mother shared that she is considering enrolling Onike in a vocational skill training center, as formal education has not brought significant improvement. She observed that Onike has a keen interest in doing her doll’s hair and that hairdressing might be a good next step for Onike.

Your support has helped in her educational journey, and your ongoing contributions will help ensure her continued growth and development whether she moves on to Junior Secondary School or Vocational School for hairdressing this coming fall.
