Powering Education When There's No Electricity

By Amy Baty-Herbert | Project Leader

Sia with her new solar light
Sia with her new solar light

Across Sierra Leone, students struggle to study after sunset due to an ongoing electricity crisis. In many communities, power outages last for hours—or days—making it nearly impossible for children to complete homework, study for exams, or keep up in school.

Thanks to the solar light that Sia just received, she no longer has to fall behind.

Solar lights offer safe, reliable, and long-lasting lighting for families who have no access to electricity or cannot afford costly fuel alternatives. For students, this simple tool often means the difference between passing and failing, progressing or dropping out.

Sia shared her gratitude: “Hello, my name is Sia. I want to say a very big thank you to Develop Africa for providing this solar light for me. It’s going to assist me in my studies because we are having an electricity crisis in our community. Thank you.”

Your ongoing support continues to change girls’ lives in powerful ways. We are deeply grateful for your steady partnership.

Monthly giving is the most effective way to ensure students have the resources they need to stay in school—but every gift, of any size, makes a meaningful difference. If you are not yet a recurring donor and would like to join us, you can sign up here.
