As mentioned in our last report as well, Educate a Girl in Turkey and give her a Future is in process of identifying and selecting girls in Turkey. We are accepting applications online in which the applicant is supposed to write a small essay that why they should get selected or how they want to work for the betterment of their society and we are getting many applications and undoubtedly the stories of these applicants and how they are as excited as us about this course is amazing.
We recently received an application from Sara, who is a university student. In her application she mentioned about the changes that she as a Turkish citizen is facing after the 2016 military coup. She explained how this sudden change in her country is effecting the people when their country is no longer considered as the safest place. She said she also got motivated to apply for Educate a Girl programme after seeing the impact this programme had on the Nigerian girls. She wrote, “I was checking the Educate a Girl website in which I found a video of an EAGNigeria scholar in which the girl explained how she got orphaned by the Boko haram and I got so emotional and inspired by that video. Emotional because how she must be feeling after losing her parents and inspired because even after facing so many problems, she still has high hopes. I showed that video to some of my friends as well and they also got same feelings, maybe because of all the issues that we are facing these days in our country, we somehow were comparing ourselves to the girl in the video and we realized that no matter what but we are so blessed and we hope that soon our country will be normal as it was before the military coup” She also explained that she is applying for this programme because she wants the world to know that the major impact the military coup and the situation in her country had was on the mindset of people that now they understand the pain of people who are living in dangerous areas and how the wish to help them as much as they could.
We, the team of Educate a Girl loved Sara’s application and there are many other application that we would also like to share with everyone.
The situation in Turkey has calmed following an attempted coup on 15 to 16 July 2016. But the security environment remains potentially volatile and a state of emergency is in place. In some busy areas, especially Istanbul, the Turkish authorities are stopping members of the public to conduct ID checks. There’s also a larger than usual number of police checkpoints on main roads across Turkey.
According to one calculation, Turkey suffered 269 attacks in 2016. Turks themselves have become afraid of going to shopping centres and open spaces, and yet they remain defiant in the face of violence.
We at Educate a Girl couldn’t wait to meet Sara and other girls like her who are writing to us daily but that’s need a lot of preparation and also support that we seek from our wonderful donors, so we could transform the lives of these girls in Turkey.
