One of the major medical barriers to providing accessible education for girls is inaccessible sanitary hygiene products. Tampons and sanitary pads are inaccessible to most Bangladeshi women as they cannot afford them, so they resort to using torn sarees. Furthermore, many schools do not provide safe conditions for menstruating women and girls. Improved hygiene practices and clean water are vital to ensuring this. However, logistical difficulties in ensuring schools have access to clean water and can implement safer hygiene practices mean that many girls are forced to miss school when they menstruate.
Keeping this in mind, JAAGO Foundation partnered with Shaathi Foundation and conducted a day-long behaviour change intervention session on Sexual Health and Reproductive Rights (SRHR)and the significance of safe menstrual practice. 73 adolescent girls from JAAGO Foundation school attended the session. The group was divided into two, and they attended the sessions simultaneously in 2 classes. Once the sessions were done, guests distributed reusable sanitary pads to hundreds of students in the school courtyard.
Overall, JAAGO's initiatives and campaigns help to empower women and improve their access to education. We are creating a more equal and fair society by breaking the cycle of period poverty and ensuring that women have the same opportunities as men.
