Polycom Development Project has been using Volleyball Sports to initiate discussions aabout several issues affecting women and girls living in the slums across Nairobi, Kenya. Ahead of the upcoming Polical period, I as a Peace Ambassador with the International Women Peace Group, have taken an initiative through my organization Polycom Development Project to bring not just members of Kibera Community but also different stakeholders working in the community to work together to promote peace.
29th July was a remarkable day where 90 women registered and different organization working in Kibera came together under this initiative to play, laugh, sing, talk and dance together. This is a way of promoting tolerance and team building. A total of 6 NGOs working in Kibera sponsored a team of 15 women each. More than 100 spectators also came around to watch the games. There were discussions on issues bonding members of the community ahead of the games. Each group of 15 women sat together and talk about the beauty of our diversity, the challenges women face and how we can engage well wishers to promote meaningful engagement.
The women had a great time and promised to have the games every month. A trophy by Ambassador Dr. Daria Mejnatowez will used for the next one year on monthly basis for the peace tournments. upto 20 teams are expected to join the initiative by December 2016.
Each team received a ball, volleyball net, tshirts and wrist bands. The winners apart from the trophy received medals. We appreciate all those who have supported us through Global Giving, Kibera will be a better place during the political period.
