This project will help facilitate early childhood and primary education, including school uniforms and shoes, meals and care to 50 vulnerable and at risk children from amidst the tin structures of the Zandspruit informal settlement In Johannesburg, South Africa. For the majority of these children, school is a temporary escape from their harsh realities and their school meal is the only meal of their day.
Located in Johannesburg, South Africa, the Zandspruit informal settlement or slum covers an area of about 1 km2 (0.39 sq miles) with a high population of over 50,000 inhabitants. This dense population is mainly composed of migrant casual labourers and job seekers. Amidst high unemployment, alcoholism, drug abuse and prostitution are rife. Most young children are unable to attend school and are left alone at home, exposed to the alleys of Zandspruit where they are vulnerable to abuse.
This project facilitates early education and a caring environment to children between 3 to 13 years. We provide them with two meals a day, school uniforms and stationary supplies and care of committed teaching and support staff. We thus provide them a place of safety during the day where they receive an education and the love and care necessary for early development. For majority of these children, school is an escape from their harsh realities and their school meal is the only meal of the day.
The provision of early childhood education and good nutrition for the children of Zandspruit, assures them of a healthier, more productive childhood and opens the door for further educational opportunities at primary level and beyond. This highly improves their chances of growing out of poverty and the slums. Their education hours also free the parents to go out to work or look for job opportunities thus improving their living standards.
