Lauren and Laura: Greetings from Barlad!

Greetings from Barlad!

We are thrilled to be back in Barlad with our special kids and team. Our last trip was five and a half months ago and the time as flown by in a flurry of activities at Delia's Center. The summer time is relaxed with lots of fun, games, and special programs. With the start of the school year, our attention turns more strongly toward continuing to provide much needed educational opportunities.

We are thrilled that nearly all of our school-age children are now in school. This is where they belong; yet we are torn because we will never understand how a 12-year-old who cannot read and write due to a severe learning disability is allowed to sit in a classroom each day not able to understand the coursework. Or how a pre-teen boy in foster care who has worked so hard in school to succeed and has reached his goal of reading Moby Dick is allowed to failed math without any offer of support -- no recognition of his accomplishments in overcoming challenging vision difficulites and a traumatic childhood. Or how an intellectually disabled 15-year girl is placed in a regular classroom at grade level and then shunned by teachers and peers.

Our plans have turned more and more to the future of the children as they become teenagers. To developing a program focused on providing direction and counseling as we want them to navigate a safe path to their futures as young adults. We expect to be sharing more information and ideas in the coming months.

Update!! AND.. our amazing visit with our children

Buna Dimineata (Good Morning) !

We wish you could have been with us to share in the joy we felt during our April visit with the children and team at Delia's Center. You have given the children a safe learning environment and they feel good about themselves knowing that they receive support and friendship here.

In April, it was myself, Laura Larkin and a US Board Member, Kyle. Lucky Laura had visited in snowy February also, braving snowstorms to be with the kids! While we are in Barlad, we try to spend as much time as possible at the center but also to connect with others locally as our organization is rooted in the community.

One of the other ways we are able to serve the community is enabled by our relationship with German NGO, Ora Kinderhilfe. Amongst the wonderful ways they help us support families and children is sending us transports of humanitarian aide from their corporate partners. It was so exciting to be there when one of these transports arrived in April bringing us Barilla pasta, oatmeal of many types from Liedl/Fortin, and Wepa toilet paper. Previous transports have brought us Adidas sneakers and shirts and items from other companies. You can imagine what a big help this is and how grateful we are to receive the items. June 1st was International Day of the Child. Our team held two celebrations so that as many children as possible could attend. We had dressed up characters who came to play with bubbles, parachutes, dancing, limbo and face painting! We started our time together with arts and crafts projects. The kids had a blast! It is so important for them to feel part of something as they are often left out of fun activities with other children.

Education and Awareness in 2026

Dear Friends,

January has flown by! Our commitment to a year of change for our children propels us with new hope into 2026. As we look to the months ahead and reflect on what goals are yet to be met, we feel it's time not only for continued education but for more awareness and action. Eight years ago we opened our doors. We are proud of our work and the educational opportunities provided to children who were born with out any opportunities at all. We can see that the children gradually have become more confident in their abilities and themselves. However, outside of our safe haven that is Delia's Center, the world often remains a cold place for our special kids. A child who is eager to learn continues to struggle to be accepted by school administrators who offer little support and no understandng of the daily challenges. Some of our kids can only attend school if a family members stays with them in the classroom. For our children who don't have parents and who are in foster, the road is uphill, often without anyone to be their champion. So what can we do in 2026? More community awareness and advocacy. More work with foster parents and parents to advise them on how to stand up for their special needs kids. Finding more way to demonstrate to the community that having a disability need not be a roadblock and that educating children, according to their needs,is the answer to how to ensure a productive future for all members of society.
