Educating Displaced Children in Somalia

By Dr. Abdullahi Hersi | Executive Director

Nomadic Assistance for Peace and Development (NAPAD) continues to make progress on this project aimed at providing access to quality education to displaced children in Somalia. The humanitarian crisis in the region is profound, with the 2024 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan revealing that 3.6 million of the 6.8 million school-aged children (5-17 years) are out of school. Projections for 2025 suggest this number will rise further, with 4.5 million children, approximately 56% of school-aged children expected to be out of school.

These alarming figures are driven by the compounded effects of climate change, conflict, and insecurity. Recurring climate-related disasters such as droughts, flash floods, and riverine floods continue to disrupt livelihoods, forcing families into overcrowded towns and cities. As a result, the population of internally displaced persons (IDPs) has increased to over four million, exacerbating the vulnerability of displaced communities. Schools in these IDP settlements are a critical lifeline, offering children access to quality education in a safe environment where they can learn and interact with their peers.

At NAPAD, we remain committed to breaking down the barriers to education faced by children living in these camps. Through this project, NAPAD aims to provide school meals ensuring students have the nutrition they need to concentrate and learn effectively, provide learning and teaching materials, establish and equip new classrooms and provide menstrual hygiene management products and support to adolescent girls to reduce absenteeism and dropout rates due to period poverty.

Currently, we have raised $182 for this initiative. We are calling on supporters to join us in this effort to guarantee displaced children in Somalia the education they deserve. Education is a powerful tool to transform lives, giving children the chance to dream of a brighter and better future.

We thank you for your continued support and partnership in this critical work.
