Back to School-But Never Back to this Orphanage

By Katharine Thompson | Director

Thanks to your generosity, the ~50 children supported by Amani came home in June—not just for the holidays, but for good. Every single child in our care is now growing up in a family or starting a phased transition plan, not an indefinite orphanage stay. June break was filled with reunification check-ins, shared meals, and long-awaited moments of everyday life: planting beans with grandma, fetching water with cousins, and sleeping in a bed that isn’t lined up in a dormitory. And now? They’re heading back to school. Over the next two weeks, all students will return to class with their school fees, uniforms, and supplies fully covered—because of you.

Your support is part of something bigger. In Tanzania, less than 30% of children who begin secondary school complete it. Many are forced to drop out due to poverty, not lack of ability. But every time you give, you help break that cycle. You’re investing in girls who are going back to class with dignity. Boys who are staying home with family instead of being sent away. Caregivers who no longer face impossible choices. It’s not just about school, it’s about stability, self-worth, and the power of being known and loved. Thank you for walking with us, and for helping rewrite the future—one child at a time.
