Summary

CWEF High School Scholarships educate and equip students from low-income families in rural China. We work with local partners to identify students who are well-qualified (good character and grades) and vulnerable (low-income, female, minority, etc). Beyond financial support, CWEF staff, local partners, and volunteers invest in these young women and equip them for life after school through enrichment activities that build resilience, leadership skills, and readiness for university or career.

Challenge

In China, public education beyond Grade 9 is not guaranteed. Students must pass entrance exams to access high school, and families must pay the tuition and fees. Across rural China, there are many well-qualified students from low-income and difficult family circumstances who struggle to afford the tuition and fees needed to stay in school, giving them the chance to graduate from high school and to continue on to higher education and meaningful careers.

Solution

CWEF's need-based scholarships make it possible for young women from difficult family circumstances to complete high school, positioning them for bright futures. In addition, student development programs prepare students for life after school. Examples of such enrichment programs include mental health and resilience-building activities, career workshops, summer camps, and volunteer opportunities, which help support the holistic growth of these students.

Long-Term Impact

We believe these young women will go on to do great things in the future. In fact, a large group of previous CWEF High School Scholarship program graduates are doing just that in China's Guangdong province with the launch of Shining Star, a domestic non-profit organization that is training university students to serve vulnerable 'left-behind' children in rural areas.
