At Nyaka schools, we’re making our girls a priority.
Most recently, we had the honor of hosting Lorrie Lynn King, the Founder and Director of 50 cents. Period. Her work focuses on making sure young girls around the world have the supplies, facilities and education relating to menstruation.
In Uganda, where access to sanitary napkins and reproductive health education are scarce or lacking altogether, young women are often left at a major disadvantage. Recent statistics state that 25% of adolescent girls become pregnant before the age of 19. That’s one of the highest rates of adolescent pregnancy in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The implications of this can be devastating. Pregnant teens are often unable to complete secondary school, which diminishes their chances for future employment, and they’re also at a higher risk of maternal death.
Lorrie spent some time with us on the ground, interviewing our students and their grandmothers. With her wonderful work, we have been further able to develop our reproductive health curriculum. Our girls will be better equipped and empowered in this world with the knowledge they’ll gain of how to take care of and protect their bodies.
After visiting Nyaka, Lorrie left us with these words: “Nyaka School changes lives and empowers entire families and communities…it is truly a blessed, magical place.”
We are so thankful for Lorrie’s dedication to this cause and the lasting impact she’ll have on the women and girls in our community!
