We don't tell you enough...YOU are amazing!
YOU have given your girls everything they need to change their futures!
Girls in Uganda who are orphaned by HIV/AIDS are more likely to marry early or have an unplanned pregnancy, and are much less likely to finish school (or even have the chance to attend)!
YOU are a bridge between them and a future of prosperity. Because of YOU, they are showing their community and the world what girls can do.
And what's even better?
Now you are building them a brand new Secondary and Vocational School!
Currently, Nyaka and Kutamba primary students must apply to Secondary and Vocational Schools in the region to continue their education. They have to live far from home and their support systems. Nyaka provides students with free tutoring, access to internet, and a case manager to help them address problems. Their Secondary and Vocational Schools do not provide many of these added supports. Most Secondary and Vocational Schools haven’t built in the unique needs of HIV/AIDS orphans into their programs.
The common practice when girls come to school at the beginning of the year, and every time they come back to school from breaks, is to give a pregnancy test to every girl. If they are found to be pregnant, the school will expel them. They must leave while all the other students and teachers watch, suffering embarrassment and ridicule. This experience is so frightening for girls that many will drop out of school if they have engaged in any sexual activity. As a result, many girls are denied education and an opportunity to escape poverty.
Nyaka believes that education is vital for girls to escape poverty. We have taken steps to improve our prevention measures as well as strategize ways to help girls who become pregnant. Unlike most of the Secondary and Vocational Schools in Uganda, The Nyaka Secondary and Vocational School will not expel girls who become pregnant. No girl will have to drop out of school because she is afraid of being ridiculed and embarrassed. She will be supported.
All of YOUR nearly 200 secondary students have worked so hard to graduate from primary school. Now they can also receive a guaranteed quality secondary education.
YOU have already put a roof on the Secondary and Vocational School's main building. Today we are sending you a first look at the brand new roof on the Girls' dormitory!
Thanks to YOU, we are making progress to opening our doors for students at the beginning of the school year in February 2015!
Keep up the great work!
