Over the summer we introduced you to a young lady named Maritina. She is a student from Nyaka Vocational Secondary School, who was chosen to represent Nyaka at the WiSci Girls STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) camp in Malawi. Maritina was joined with other students from Liberia, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, the United States, and Zambia. This was the 3rd STEAM Girls’ camp and it was organized by The U.S. Department of State’s Office of Global Partnerships, Girl Up, and World Learning.
The STEAM Camp offered the girls a new way through which to see the world and themselves, and opportunities to connect with other people and to build bridges across cultural, ethnic, and geographical divides. The girls gained new skills and perspectives in the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. Maritina said, “I really can’t wait to share the knowledge and skills that I acquired from the camp with my schoolmates and the community at large.” Attending the WiSci camp also gave Maritina the chance to explore career opportunities that she might not have considered before. The first lady of Malawi spoke to the girls and told them, “if our dreams do not scare us, we know that they are not enough.” Maritina will never forget these words or the amazing experience she had at the camp.
YOUR love and support will help other girls, just like Maritina, reach goals that they never thought possible. Thank you!
Remember to support your girls on #GivingTuesday, November 28th!
