For refugee children in Malaysia going to school is only a distant dream. Due to a lack of legal status, refugees cannot seek legal work, children can't attend school, and access to healthcare is limited. Fugee School provides education and life skills to refugee children and youth so they can build meaningful and dignified lives. With your support, Fugee School will be able to guarantee access to innovative learning and care programs for over 180 refugee children.
Malaysia is a transition country for refugees from all around the world. While waiting for resettlement, a process which can take years, refugees have to rely on organisations like Payong and its Fugee School to access education. The education of refugee children brings additional challenges due to their disrupted learning in the past, the traumatic experiences suffered, and the difficulties of starting a life in a new country and culture, without knowing how long this transit period will last.
Being in school creates a sense of normalcy in the life of refugee children, contributing to their intellectual development and emotional well-being, and helping them overcome the traumas of war. Following a holistic approach to education, Fugee School's academic and non-academic programmes on art, music, sports and personal development aim at building the hard and soft skills of refugee children so they will be able to reach their full potential.
Fugee School students are knowledgeable, creative, open-minded and tolerant. The skills acquired through Fugee School will enable them to be more transition ready and better able to take advantage of job opportunities. Empowering all refugees to be productive members of society and to build meaningful lives wherever they are. In Malaysia, Fugee School students help transform refugee communities and improve refugee integration with Malaysian host communities.
