Challenge

Access to primary education in rural areas of Zambia is thwarted a range of barriers, such as distances exceeding 5km between school and home, poverty, early/forced marriage, gender discrimination and a lack of and inappropriate school infrastructure disproportionately impacting those with special needs and disabilities. Nearly half of rural children in our area are out of school, and disparities in education access are around just 23% of primary-aged children in rural areas versus 9% in urban.

Solution

This project builds off of a proven model that is endorsed by Ministry of General Education (MOGE). VOWAZA will facilitate the retention of 2,280 OOSC enrolled in school in three rural communities across the country by providing school uniforms and requisites, school feeding, build low cost 1X2 classroom blocks with a 1X5 toilet block, facilitate construction of low cost standard teacher's houses and start-up capital to 15 impoverished community schools for more effective school management.

Long-Term Impact

The proposed interventions will ensure that all children of school age going are in school as one of the yardsticks push for the achievement of Seventh National Development Plan (7NDP), is the need for it to create a Zambia where no one will be left behind as the economy continues to grow. The project will mitigate the barriers and bottlenecks that inhibit the Out of School Children (OOSC) from accessing schools and staying in schools.
