We work with day care centers and orphanages in Poland to support their Ukrainian wards' literacy skills - as a way to build these refugee children's fundamental competencies for the future. Our goal is to be able to give a book to a child and help him or her through personal assistance in reading by an educator or tutor - to minimize the traumatic effects of the war.
There are approximately 400 000 Ukrainian children and another 100 000 orphans in Poland. They all have the right to learn to read in order to - then - read to learn and thus to realize their full potential through good results in education. The only way to help is through porviding them with books and being with them and for them, assisting them in their way to reading proficiency. A book alone is not enough.
Our program is a direct intervention based on two evidence-based assumptions: one being the fact that children have to have books of their own to become readers, the other that the effective way to make a change (invite to reading to give a tool indispensible for education) is through personal assistance focused on dialogue, fun and caring help. We provide books in Ukrainian, English and Polish.
Reading is not only a tool for education, it is most importantly a tool to give all children equal chances in life - to realize their full potential. Evidence show that early reading and talking intervention stimulates the childs brain development - more synapses are created. When we stimulate the brain development and in the same time make the child love reading - that is a longterm positive impact because they will continue reading and thriving.
