Teaching Percentages through Compost Making

By Nasira Habib | Project Leader

Khoj—Society for People's Education champions a unique pedagogy that intertwines relevant, integrative, and gender-responsive education. We firmly believe that real-life situations and problems are not isolated but rather intricately connected. By unravelling these intertwined threads, one can gain a deeper understanding of them.

Students at our village school faced challenges in translating real-life percentage, fraction, and ratio problems into mathematical language. However, their active involvement in agricultural activities, including a hands-on learning garden, provided a unique solution. By participating in a composting activity, they learned to create separate piles of high nitrogen, greens, and woody materials in a specific ratio, thereby applying mathematical concepts in a practical setting.

An in-depth discussion followed with students and teachers. They could understand how many parts out of one hundred parts were high nitrogen, greens and woody materials respectively. As they could relate to the activity, finding the correspondence between the compost material and the mathematical concepts of percentages and fractions was much easier for them.

In the end, many real-life situations were discussed that presented per cent problems, such as discounts, price increases, and bank profit and loss.

The participants were very excited and found this teaching method very helpful. They thought such learning was unforgettable.

All these activities are possible just because of your support!
