Celebrating International Mother Language Day

By Nasira Habib | Project Leader

Khoj – Society for People’s Education works with children through an approach and methodology focusing on action-led, integrative, relevant education. Khoj School celebrated International Mother Language Day on 21 February 2024 to reinforce children’s love for their mother tongue. The celebration aimed to raise awareness about the significance of mother tongues in preserving cultural heritage, fostering intercultural dialogue, and promoting sustainable development. Children find it easier to learn things in their mother tongue because it’s the language they are most familiar with. This familiarity makes it easier for them to grasp new concepts, engage in activities, and analyse and present their ideas.

In addition to the students and teachers, children’s parents and other community members participated in the event. The students showed their love for their mother tongue, Punjabi, by presenting several items, including singing, dancing, and acting in stage plays. They also delivered speeches on the importance of the mother tongue. They showed a strong interest in learning more about the Punjabi language and culture.

The celebration of Mother Language Day at Khoj School positively enhanced children’s pride in their mother tongue. The other participants also gained a deeper appreciation for their mother tongue and expressed a renewed commitment to preserving and promoting their language.

Celebrating mother tongues promotes mutual respect among speakers of different languages, contributing to social harmony and reducing language-based discrimination.

We can do all this because of your generous donations. We request that you continue supporting Khoj School.
