Improving the Quality of Education

Hiring quality teachers remains a challenge for Khoj School for Community Education, given the remoteness of the village and the high crime in the area. School graduates are hired and trained as teachers, but the teacher turnover is high due to teachers leaving the village after getting married. So, hiring and training newly inducted teachers is an ongoing feature at the school. At present, teachers are given laptops and encouraged to use technology to have access to learning and teaching resources. They are guided to use resources that align with Khoj's unique teaching methodology.

Additionally, computer access helps teachers and students learn computer applications like MS Word, PowerPoint and MS Excel. Using technology, students can also expand their knowledge by exploring topics beyond their textbooks and watching videos related to various topics. This experiment with just two laptops has proven to be a great success. We plan to set up a proper computer lab with at least 20 laptops and a few internet devices.

Khoj School Celebrated Rice Festival

To keep the community rooted in their culture, Khoj organizes a yearly Rice Festival. It takes place during the harvesting season. This year, it took place on November 24, 2023. Teachers, students, and parents actively participated in the festival. They were provided with an overview of the significance of the rice crop to the national economy. Students and their families prepared more than forty traditional rice dishes. Skits and traditional dances were performed.

Celebrating Harvest at Khoj School Garden

School gardens provide the opportunity for students and teachers to work together in real situations. Gardens serve as living laboratories where students learn by doing.

Our curriculum incorporates agroecology, with kids participating in hands-on organic gardening in our school garden. Students and teachers sowed a variety of vegetable seeds in the school garden for winter gardening, including potatoes, spinach, radishes, garlic, peas, onion, tomatoes, cauliflower, coriander, carrots, beetroot, fenugreek, radish pods and mustard using organic methods. This allowed students to grow food without using chemicals and learn the science behind it. Their efforts paid off with good harvests. Teachers and students celebrated the harvest by preparing snacks and enjoying them. The garden promotes healthy eating habits and provides hands-on learning experiences about producing delicious, healthy, nutrient-rich food.

Khoj- Society for People Education is dedicated to providing gender-just, inclusive, relevant and integrative education in remote villages. Despite a positive change in community attitudes over the years, still there are very few families sending differently abled children to school. To address this problem, Khoj has launched an enrolment campaign to enrol these children in our school. We are committed to inclusivity, ensuring that all children, regardless of their abilities, learn together. We were able to convince some parents and three children were enrolled from nearby villages. 

This approach benefits not only differently abled children but also enriches the overall educational experience of all students. It promotes a caring culture and children learn from each other's unique abilities. Khoj- Society for People Education is transforming lives and working towards a more inclusive society where unique abilities are celebrated.
