Educate the Most Underserved Children of Pakistan

Khoj School for Community Education keeps receiving visitors from Pakistan and abroad. Many of them are interested in seeing the unique Khoj methodology of teaching and learning in place. But in January 2020, three members of a family came from England to celebrate part of their holiday with children at the school. As they had also visited the school four years ago, they already knew a good number of children; it was a happy reunion.

The visitors came with piles of gifts for the children, which contained a variety of pencils, erasers, sharpeners, rulers, pencil cases and lunch boxes. And, of course, a lot of sweets! The children were excited, and their eyes were glowing with happiness because all the items were not only useful but were also colourful and aesthetically pleasing. 

They went to every class and met every child. Children sang songs and role played for them. They also shared with them their literacy and other educational skills. Later, they accompanied them to the school garden, which provides a platform for learning several concepts and skills. 

It was an exciting exchange! The senior students had a long chat with the guests, which must have given them a lot of food for thought.   

It was a unique experience for children at school; a mutual celebration! Children loved their gifts and enjoyed their chat. And, for the visitors, it was a rewarding trip!

We encourage more visitors as their presence increases and expands children's exposure to the world.

On October 15, 2019, women from 8 villages got together to mark International Rural Women's Day. It was the celebration of rural women’s contribution to the household and national economy.
It was also an occasion to build awareness on the hazards of agricultural poisons and synthetic inputs. Children from Khoj School for Community Education prepared role-plays, songs and skits with the focus on the harmful effects of chemical pesticides on human health and the critical importance of growing food in harmony with nature.
Children role-played as different organs in the human body, informing the audience of their functions in a healthy body as well as cautioning them as to what may happen with exposure to toxins and chemicals such as pesticides. It was of vital importance and informative for both the women and the students as they are often exposed to pesticides in their daily life working in their fields. The children also prepared songs and skits on the importance of Agroecology and growing food in harmony with nature.

The event had all the makings of a festival with stalls for delicious homemade food for everyone to enjoy, dances immaculately choreographed and lively music to truly brighten up the day.

The culmination of the celebration was singing and dancing on the beat of a drum by all the women.
