EBZEF Project Update #8

By Linda O. Bowers | Executive Director

It has been 20 years since we lost our beloved daughter Elizabeth (Beth) in a bicycle accident while she was serving as an aquaculture instructor in the Peace Corps in the remote rural village of Lumwana West in NW Zambia. This spring’s issue of EBZEF’s newsletter THE PROTEA is a celebration of Beth’s life and of her continuing vision for global peace and understanding.

The special insert celebrates Beth’s “life well-lived,” while the newsletter celebrates the continuation of her efforts to ”empower women, children, and their community in Lumwana West, to break the cycle of poverty through education.” As the Elizabeth Bowers Zambia Education Fund (EBZEF) maintains our programs, your continuing support and encouragement are making such a difference for so many in Beth’s village on the other side of the world.

Beth’s Girls continue to flourish as EBZEF college/vocational school scholarship recipients in a variety of fields, from teaching and medicine to electrical engineering, metal fabrication, public administration, and natural resources management.  Classes and graduations are moving ahead in spite of Covid restrictions.

Lumwana West’s Early Childhood Education program is thriving. A new grant is funding the Pre-School lunch program while the children learn how to grow their own food with the garden project.

Secondary school construction is moving ahead.  The third three-classroom block is very near completion.  A much-needed boys’ lavatory is now fully operational.  A family teacher’s house is the next project.  EBZEF hopes to assist in a solar project for the classrooms to extend the hours of use for an overcrowded school system.

Enjoy the spring PROTEA issue for much more project detail (link to newsletter listed below under "Links:"). Feel free to share Beth’s dream and the EBZEF newsletter with those you think may be interested. Thank you for your continuing support.
