Ledy is one of our nursing scholarship recipeints from the global giving youth spark project. She is finishing her internship at the Dime Hospital in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
Last month while we were working in Honduras, we went to see Ledy work. We cleared it with her supervisor and Ledy had no idea we were coming. We kept ourselves out of site while we watched her work for about one hour. It was amazing to watch. Her obvious committment to the nursing carreer was overwhelming. Never stopping, always smiling, and encouraging the patients. She was also respectful to her superiors and carried out her orders immediately.
At some point, we revealed ourselves and told her who we were. She knew my name as project director but had never met me. She knew about global giving helping her but had no real connection except the internet. When introduced by her supervisor she was beyond excited. The staff was kind enough to give us some time together to discuss her experiences and how her life has been changed forever.
All I could think of was how many lives this one life was going to change others through her caregiving, nurturing and skills as as healthe care provider.
Global Giving and Microsoft did not just change one life, they will have effected change in many lives now and in the future. This is a true domino effect that is a goal of changing poverty into an ability to care for yourself and break the cycle.
