May activities on Radio Meraj

By Elizabeth A Appleyard | Program Administrator

Here is a snapshot of one month of activity on Radio Meraj. The station has the largest coverage area of any local broadcaster reaching as far as 100km.  In addition to the whole of Herat City, the station reaches 9 districts outside the city and even villages further afield.

In addition to broadcasting, the station also responds to listener questions and inquiries. People send messages by phone, Telegram, Whatsapp and Facebook. The staff answer questions about law, health issues, local problems, political events and about the station programs.

The goals of the station are to inform people about their rights and freedoms, provide education, especially for the young, keep people informed about what is going on in their local communities as well as nationally.  The station seeks to provide women and girls with information about their rights introducing positive role models and educated speakers who discuss civil laws, family life, conflict management, leadership.  The broadcasts include speakers from Europe and other parts of Afghanistan who are experts, university professors, civil activists and political figures. In May the speakers included: specialists in psychology, eye surgery, children with disabilities and digestive problems

One listener had this to say: “ I am happy that there is a media outlet in Herat that tries to familiarize the young generation with the culture of reading by introducing good books. I have been listening to the program "Andiseh" for some time, and this program made me go to Herat libraries to borrow the book "Leadership and Self-Deception". The root of  the current problems in Afghanistan goes back to people's lack of education, and if more media had programs like this, I am sure that our situation would improve."

Thank you for your continued interest in the Meraj Media enterprises.
