Teaching Across Miles: Empowering Students in Rural Mongolia through education

By Khulan Gantumur | Program Manager

From 2022 to 2025, GlobalGiving support has enabled the Teach For Mongolia (TFM) Fellowship Program to make significant advances in educational equity in rural Mongolia. Throughout this period, 43 fellows have traveled a combined 79,428 km to teach in 11 provinces, 16 soums, and 18 rural schools, directly reaching more than 7,400 students.  On June 25, 2025, our second cohort of alumni successfully completed their fellowship. Notably, 80% of these six alumni have continued their careers in K–12 education, demonstrating the program’s lasting impact and commitment to local capacity building.

Beginning in the 2025–2026 academic year, TFM recruited and placed 10 new fellows in five rural schools, where they are receiving continuous coaching in both instructional teaching methodologies and leadership development. All training modules are aligned with 21st-century educators’ competencies, with a strong emphasis on Project-Based Learning (PBL) to promote practical problem-solving, creativity, and student engagement in the classroom.

Based on insights gained over the past three years, the Mongolian education system continues to face key challenges such as qualified teacher shortages, limited professional development opportunities, and weak school management structures. These realities reaffirm the necessity of our work and the importance of expanding changemakers' teaching opportunities within rural schools.

In the next recruitment cycle in January 2026, we plan to train and place 25 additional fellows in current partner schools while building stronger partnerships to enhance long-term community impact. Through this continued effort, more children across Mongolia are gaining equitable access to quality education, the confidence to explore their potential, and the skills needed to shape brighter futures for themselves and their communities.
