The focus of this week's request is once again for the education of Haitian youth and young adults. Education is a way out of poverty, a way to independence , a way to knowledge, a way to freedom. All Haitians know this, just like you and me, but knowing its importance and being able to afford it are two different things. That is where BonZeb and so many other organizations try to fill the gap.
Lack of resources and/or opportunity to attend school in Haiti. Most Haitians will never achieve higher than a 3rd grade education. 80% illiteracy and 80% unemployment keeps most Haitian children at home. There are too few teachers and educators and too few opportunities for the poorest families to achieve their dream. Through creating a larger pool of qualified, well educated teachers and entrepreneurs HEAR is having a positive impact on these issues.
It helps the poorest and brightest students in Haiti to have an opportunity to attend secondary school, trade and technology schools and university. Working with the Salesians and Notre Dame University Haiti we are able to offer education opportunities at seven university campuses, three trade and technology schools and 6 secondary schools. Through the Salesians and SAKALA we also have the opportunity to support youth in after-school programs.
For each student educated the lives of hundreds or thousands can be affected when what they have learned and contacts they have made are put into practice in their home community. This is being repeated in all ten departments where our youth have had an impact giving back what they have received. Students are starting schools of their own and other community outreaches. They are striving make a difference.
