Giving Hope

By Tom Stein | President

Good afternoon.

We hope that you are all enjoying the last few weeks of summer, even as many of us are preparing for the start of the school year. Some have even gone back to school already.

Today I would like to tell you about our ongoing efforts to offer financial assistance to young students in Haiti.

This morning, I read an article about gang activity in one of the cities we have students in, Gonaives. When we hear the troubling news coming out of Haiti many draw back their support in fear that the funds will not get to the intended audience. I can confirm that even with this latest news Cardinal Keeler and Notre Dame University are still open and operating. It is a difficult life for our students and our faculties when these trials come their way.

Yesterday it was similar news coming from Cap Haitian and the fact that teachers were not showing up for exams due to the fact that they have not been paid in a few months. This, however, is an issue for only the public schools. Once again Foundation Vicent and Notre Dame University are open and operating. That is one reason we place our students in these types of institutions. They take very good care of their students and their faculties and staffs.

But they are not free and the cost of an individual at CK or FV is between $350 and $500, while the cost to attend Notre Dame University in Hinche, Gonaives and Cap Haitien is between $1,000 and $1,500. We have students in each of these schools as well as a few in Les Cayes and one is trying to finish his final year in Port au Prince.

That is 9 students that need your help in paying $5,500 in tuition this coming year.

On top of that we are also trying to support a local school in Boucantiste, where most of our workers’ children attend a small day school. They would like to raise funds for textbooks and an additional teacher.

As we continue to work and serve the people of Haiti, we ask that your become a regular donor to this cause and think about supporting 1 student in the coming year. Your generosity, prayers and support are what make our work possible.

Thank you.
