Update for FY 2018 - 2019

By Umme Hamdani | Manager Communication & Coordination

Khel aims to provide a chance of respite to this generation of younglings with the provision of a space which is tailored to encourage children to be children. Our program caters to the needs of a child; recreation, rest, leisure and education.

Our research in Machar Colony shows that:

  • 82.2% of the community members are uneducated
  • 11.6% who are educated also includes those who know how to read or write their own name.
  • 33% of children attend schools/madarssahs.
  • 54% children are either working in shrimp peeling factories or getting involved in anti-social activities.
  • Non-existent recreational facilities/parks/playgrounds in the area.

 Khel creates impact by:

  • Providing a safe and secure environment to children.
  • Support both schooling, sports as well as vocational training amongst youngsters.
  • Cultivate positive attitude, character building and a sense of responsibility amongst children
  • Create awareness regarding health, hygiene inclusive of mental health.
  • Reduce incidences of violence and drug abuse

Khel focuses on the concept of Learning through Play:

Learning through play is a term used in education and psychology to describe how a child can learn to make sense of the world around them. Play is used to potentially develop social and cognitive skills, mature emotionally, and gain the self-confidence required to engage in new experiences and environments. Children learn more in a nurturing and loving environment. Play helps children express themselves and work through their emotions and feelings.

Khel serves as a community centre and a play area for children. Women of the community find the space safe for children and younger women. Children are ambassadors of change which is visible through:

  • Change of attitudes of parents
  • Change in appearance & cleanliness
  • Accepting of each other’s background
  • Non - violent attitude
