Kidasha recognises that the circumstances and abilities of each child growing up in chronic urban poverty in Nepal are different and for some going to school may not be a realistic option. The project therefore aims to identify vulnerable out-of-school children in two of Nepal's largest cities and help them access formal and/or informal learning opportunities that align with their individual needs and give them the best chance of a brighter future.
There are practical, emotional & financial issues preventing many of the poorest children growing up in urban slums from enrolling in school, attending regularly or cause them to drop out early. Inability to afford uniforms/books/supplies & school fees. Living in chaotic households with a lack of parental care and guidance. Previous negative experiences of school (bullying, lack of attainment, excessive discipline) Pressure to work to supplement income. Need to care for family. Child marriage.
We ensure every child has access to learning opportunities that align with their individual needs. We identify out-of-school children and then work with their families to understand and address the barriers preventing attendance. We can provide uniforms, books & fees, community-based after-school clubs. For working children we give them access to non-formal learning which includes a functional learning course to improve basic literacy and numeracy skills relevant to their jobs.
Every year we hope to give comprehensive support at least 500 children to enrol and attend school. Provide remedial education for 560 children at risk of drop out through community-based homework clubs in slum communities. Deliver bespoke alternative education to 100 adolescents unable to return to school.
