The Voyage of A Lifetime

By Christina Stellini | Resource Development Volunteer

Dorcas has been part of the St. Vincent’s family for over 20 years. She joined our Nursery School in 2004 when she was 4 years old, and with her two sisters, came to live in our Rescue Centre the following year after losing her mother. Her journey symbolizes the power of resilience and at the same time, demonstrates the critical importance of St. Vincent’s unique commitment to providing comprehensive, customized and long-term support to children to enable them to survive and thrive.

Following Nursery School, Dorcas continued living at our Rescue Centre, where she resides today. She has been nurtured by our House Mother, Grace, and has received educational support from St. Vincent’s throughout her primary, secondary and university education. Today, she is a student at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa studying chemistry and mathematics. Dorcas has an absolute love of learning and great ambition for her future. Over the years, she has worked extremely hard to excel in school and to help others in her community through volunteering.

One of Dorcas’ longtime dreams has been to study abroad on Semester at Sea: a three-month program that provides a “floating campus” to ~600 students while they travel around the world visiting 10 countries. Dorcas heard about the program from a volunteer at St. Vincent’s who was a Semester at Sea alum, but knew it would be extremely challenging to turn this dream into a reality. Yet, Dorcas would not let that dissuade her.....

After a highly competitive application process, in late 2022, Dorcas received news that she was awarded the coveted, full-ride Desmond Tutu Ubuntu scholarship by Semester at Sea. She spent several months getting her passport and acquiring visas to the many countries she would visit (an uphill battle all the way!). Finally, in January of this year, Dorcas boarded her first ever plane ride headed to Dubai, UAE. Since then, Dorcas has travelled to India, Kenya, Jordan, Cyprus, Greece and is currently in Croatia. Over the next few weeks, she will get to also visit Spain, Morocco, Portugal and Germany, before returning to Kenya. Following her return, Dorcas will head back to finish her studies at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.

Dorcas says of her journey with Semester at Sea: “ [the program is] transforming individuals into global citizens through making us aware of the global disasters, some solutions and the role we as the young generation have to make this world a better place for all.”

We are so very proud of Dorcas’ accomplishments and excited for the doors that this experience will offer her!
